WILLIAM TANUWIJAYA
William Tanuwijaya (Pematang
Siantar November 11, 1981) is an Indonesian entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of Tokopedia, an Indonesian
technology company with a leading e-Commerce business. (1) He has been representing Indonesia as Young Global Leader at
World Economic Forum since 2016. (2)
He received Satyalancana Wira Karya or Medal of Honor from the President of
Indonesia for his contribution to Indonesia technology and economic growth in
2019.
Tanuwijaya was born in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra. He graduated from high school there, His family
was middle income who supported his education. William went to college at
Universitas Bina Nusantara (Binus) Jakarta. William married Felicia H.W. on
November 28, 2015.
(3) He was working all day in an internet cafe to pay for his collage
in 2003. He then
worked as a software developer in companies including TelkomSigma and Sqiva Sistem. He later worked as a game
developer at Bolehnet. In 2006 Tanuwijaya worked as IT and Business Development
Manager at Indocom Mediatama.
(7) In 2007 William
started to build an e-commerce platform, it is named as Tokopedia. (6)
He asked his friend Leontinus Alpha
Edison as co-founder to develop an e-commerce startup that connects Indonesian
buyers and sellers for free. At the same time his father was diagnosed
with cancer. (8) He have to support his family since that
time.
William is one of the founders of Indonesia e Commerce
Association (IdEA) and serves as a member of its supervisory board.
On February 6, 2009,
Tokopedia officially launched. At that year's Indonesia Celebration of
Independence on August 17 Tokopedia opened for public access. In October 2014,
Tokopedia received US $100 million from Softbank Internet and Media and Sequoia Capital. In
2016 Tanuwijaya represented Indonesia as a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum. (4) Tokopedia had been received a total of
$1.1 bilion from Alibaba Group by the time they announced the next stage of
investment in August, 2017. (5) Tokopedia also be the first ecommerce
platform to accommodate 90 million user/ month in Indonesia.
